Oberammergau Passion Play 2010
Since 1634, the townspeople of Oberammergau, Germany have honored their pledge to portray the suffering of Christ in a drama every 10 years.
| The Oberammergau Passion Play first took place in 1634. Facing
the devastating plague called the "Black Death", the people of the
German village of Oberammergau pledged to perform a play
every ten years, portraying the 'passion' or suffering of Christ,
if the town would be spared from further casualties. 2010 will
be the 41st performance of the play, enacted entirely by local
townspeople. One year prior to the performances, the actors
start rehearsals and begin growing their hair to ensure that the
characters look as realistic as possible. More than 1500 adults
and 500 children are typically involved. |
